Unique Optimism Outdoor & Community Support Services is a private service agency in Hamilton that exists for one simple reason:

To support adults with developmental & intellectual disabilites have more fun, more connection, and more of the kind of life that everyone else takes for granted.

We’re here to break the routine, get folks out of the house and offer real, welcoming spaces where people can laugh, make friends, and try something new. Whether it’s our weekly evening program (The Trailblazers Club), our epic vibes TGIF Nights, our 1:1 Trailblazer Support Sessions or one of our random pop-up events; everything we do is about support in the community, not checkboxes.

Our heart is in creating spaces where everyone can connect, explore, and belong not just go through the motions. We're building something bigger, a community where adults in the developmental and intellectual community can feel like they actually belong.

Last night at The Adventure Club program was our monthly Cook and Connect.

It was Emily’s turn to pick the meal and she chose tacos and salad.

Cook and Connect is also about learning some scratch cooking and making healthier choices without overthinking it. We talked a bit about why cast iron and wooden utensils are solid kitchen staples, and how making your own taco seasoning is not only better for you but also way cheaper.

Also, if you want to eat, you have to help cook. That’s the rule. Everyone pitches in. Honestly there was a lot of laughter in the kitchen last night.

After dinner the four amigos hung around and connected. We threw on Ninja Turtles and somehow ended up doing a solid amount of inclusive chair dancing, which actually turned into a pretty decent workout.

Epic food, funny laughs, and awesome pals. That’s what Cook and Connect nights at The Adventure Club program are all about!

Trailblazer Feature: Doug

Doug joined both The Adventure Club program and Tne Trailblazers Club program last fall and has been rocking it ever since. He continues to be an active Adventure Club participant and brings a great attitude and strong presence to every adventure.

Over the past seasons, we have had the privilege of watching Doug grow in so many ways. The number of times he has pushed himself outside of his comfort zone has been incredible to witness.

This winter season of The Trailblazers Club, Doug stepped into a new role as a Trailblazer Sidekick. He initially joined TBC as a Trailblazer, but together we realized that a paid role might be a better fit where he could continue to grow while also building valuable experience for his resume.

Doug previously worked for the same company for 16 years, which speaks volumes about his dedication and strong work ethic. He takes pride in his role, shows up ready to contribute, and is always willing to step in and help where needed. Doug is currently exploring new employment opportunities, and any team would be lucky to have someone with his reliability, positive attitude, and commitment to doing a job well.

Us Pathfinders are incredibly proud of Doug and everything he accomplished this winter season. Watching him challenge himself, step up, and continue to grow has been awesome to see.

So proud of you, Doug. Keep blazing that trail.

TGIF Nights are back! Our first one of the year is coming up next month!

March 27 we’re hosting a free TGIF Night Community Give-Back Dance in support of Club Gain.

This one means a lot to me. Club Gain, part of the Down Syndrome Association of Hamilton, runs volunteer-powered dances for adults in the developmental & intellectual disabilities community and has been a huge supporter of UO.

This night is my way of giving back.

Free admission.

Non-perishable food items and toiletry donations are HIGHLY ENCOURAGED in support of Club Gain.

If you’re in Hamilton and haven’t checked out Inclusion Coffee House yet, you’re missing out.

Today’s Adventure Club stop was Inclusion Coffee House and honestly this place is just awesome.

A few things that make it stand out:

• Nobody is stressed if ordering takes a minute. People take their time and it’s normal. No awkward rushing, no weird looks. Just patience and respect.

• It doesn’t feel like a “program”. It feels like a coffee shop. People hanging out, chatting, laughing, doing their thing. Just humans being humans.

• The staff and volunteers are the kind of people you can tell genuinely care. The kindness here isn’t forced or scripted. It’s just the culture of the place.

• You see real connection happening. People talking, friendships forming, folks feeling comfortable enough to actually be themselves.

• Also the drinks and snacks are solid, which automatically earns bonus points from us.
